I am from Commerce, TX and began CrossFit in 2011 as a means to prepare for firefighting. I love to both watch and play sports. I am a huge nerd - comic books (Batman all the way) to video games to astronomy are on the shortlist of what keeps me occupied.
I started CrossFit in a local gym on South Padre Island with Coach JJ. Originally, I was just a runner, but wanted to get stronger and feel more fit - CrossFit did just that! Not much later, we opened our first gym in Brownsville, Texas. I have been coaching kids and adults since 2012. In terms of youth/kids programming, I have taught physical education, strength and conditioning to those ranging from ages 5 to 17. I currently run a CrossFit Kids after school program at Mata Elementary School.
When I am not at Torva, I love reading and writing my blog Build Up Kids. I have two puppies Gordito and Shiner that require a lot of my attention. When I get free time I love to travel and be outdoors.
Dallas is my current home, and I am originally from Pennsylvania. This is also where I went to college, and while there, I was a national powerlifter. In about 2011, I was looking for something to help me gain additional strength and accessory work in the off-season - that's when I found CrossFit.
I am a proud mom of two feline fur-babies (three if you count the one I left in Pittsburgh with my parents). I work to give them a better life. I am just as passionate about pizza as I am about the fitness journey that allows me to eat it, as long as there is pineapple on top.
Getting to know members and coaching to what they need.
Just around 2013, my wife convinced me to take a CrossFit class. I currently serve as a coach and co-owner at both CrossFit Allen and CrossFit Torva. When I'm not in the gym, I'm busy raising five kids and sending food to restaurants all over America.
Carla is a former collegiate soccer player who attended East Central University. After graduating, she found CrossFit and fell in love with the program due to the undeniable results and great community.
When not at the gym, Carla works in the advertising/media industry and is also working towards her Masters in Business Administration at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. She has a passion for fitness, food and traveling.
Live in Dallas and I started CrossFit on August 20, 2013 with Fight Gone Bad. I was terrified to try it, but I was living in a small town and needed friends. I found much more than just friend's, I found a community!
I admit, I am a workaholic, but when not in a gym (for work or CrossFit) I enjoy spending time with my family. My furbaby and I like to spend time outside and we often frequent the dog park and Arbor Hills in Plano. I have been known to try to work on my golf swing and even pull out my fishing pole.
Jessica is a former competitive volleyball player and attended Oklahoma State University, later on transferring and graduating from Southern Methodist University.
After being introduced to JJ in 2017, she began to compete more competitively in CrossFit and actively following Power and Grace Performance. Her proudest CrossFit moment is finishing 32nd in the South Central Regional on workout 18.2a of the 2018 CrossFit Open. When not at the gym, Jessica works at iHeartMedia as the promotions coordinator for the radio stations Lonestar 92.5 and 106.1 KISS FM. Her passions include traveling/adventure, fitness, food, quoting The Office and talking in Game of Thrones accents with JJ, car pool karaoke and anything Beyonce.
I've been practicing CrossFit (both as a training methodology and as a sport) since 2010, and love to be able to share what I have learned throughout my journey with others. I went from being overweight in high school to just trying to be active and healthy in college. I was never into fitness for the aesthetic, but more so to be a better human being and a better athlete. I have coached at three different CrossFit gyms in North Texas, and I have enjoyed working with athletes of all ages and skills levels - from home school physical education programs, CrossFit 101 and helping to coach and strategize for competition.
Home is where the heart is - or Korean BBQ, that works too.
